Once a month we sit down with a member of the Tremco Construction Products Australia (CPG) team to share some of their wisdom and expertise with us. This month we talked to Head of Market Segment – Waterproofing & Roofing APAC and Pacific National Product & Marketing Manager, David Mason.

David Mason

1. What is the most memorable experience you have had during your time with Tremco CPG or any of its brands?

The most memorable experience I have had during my time at Tremco CPG Australia was visiting our Tremco head office in Cleveland, USA. I have been lucky enough to travel to our head office on a couple of occasions to tour our manufacturing facilities and spend time with our Marketing and Product Management teams, as well as spend time with the US sales team at their annual conference in Arizona. This travel experience has given me some great opportunities to build a strong internal network.

2. What construction product technology most interests you and why?

The construction products space is continually evolving, however I have a keen interest in rapid curing technologies including Methyl Methacrylates (MMA).  MMA systems such as our Deckshield range and polyurea waterproofing membranes such as our Tremproof P85 particually interest me, as I see a real benefit being offered to contractors and builders having the ability to speed up the construction cycle. Hybrid sealant technologies like our Dymonic FC also interest me as they are such a big market in Europe. If I stay on the same theme and combine hybrid technology and rapid curing products our new EUCO QWIKstitch is a technology I am really looking forward to promoting in the industry.

3. Where do you foresee the growth in the construction industry over the next five years?

Other than the obvious infrastructure projects and data centre growth, I am curious to see the growth in compliance and standards in the industry. I feel we are a long way behind how they build in North America and Europe and we could learn a lot from them. Air & moisture control will become a popular topic in the next five years with continued rising energy costs.

4. What are the biggest hurdles the construction industry is currently facing across Australia?

There are three key hurdles that I would highlight being supply chain, the economy and skilled labour. Construction is the same as any other industry and requires skilled labour to get the job done right. Sadly there are limited people doing these key trades in the country which slows down construction dramatically. The supply chain issues do not seem to be getting any better whether it is raw materials or freight which causing ongoing delays. Inflation and rising interest rates have slowed the construction industry as a whole and the industry is still feeling the effects of the pressures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

5. What is the most important aspect of your role in Tremco CPG Australia and why?

The most important aspect of my role as Head of Market Segment – Waterproofing & Roofing APAC and Pacific National Product & Marketing Manager is to ensure Tremco CPG Australia is properly addressing the changing needs of the marketplace as it relates to our product line offerings for the Construction market. For our team it is all about educating internal and external stakeholders to understand the technologies on offer and how they can be used to create better buildings.
