About the Project
Opened in October 1967, Toombul shopping centre boasts more than 140 specialty stores plus an array of major department stores and supermarkets. Toombul was the largest shopping centre in Brisbane’s northside until the Chermside redevelopment in 2000.
Over time and through just regular wear and tear, the two major skylights over the shopping area had been leaking for some time. Various attempts to repair the problem had been made.
With both of the aforesaid options being financially prohibitive, the client was limited to finding a suitable solution. The options available to the client were to double glaze or replace the entire skylight. The introduction of Simple seal was the only viable and cost effective solution.
Tremco Solution
Spectrem Simple Seal is an ultra-low modulus, preformed silicone extrusion specifically designed to have high elongation properties. Simple Seal is typically bonded with
Spectrem 1 Silicone Sealant to a wide range of substrates to provide a watertight seal.
Tremco Solution
With both of the aforesaid options being financially prohibitive, the client was limited to finding a suitable solution. After Tremco was approached by the contractor, Simple seal was clearly the product of choice.
Simple seal was a cost effective solution. Substantially cheaper than the alternatives.
The time required to prepare, apply and complete the project was also considerably quicker. Despite the fact that the product had to be flown in, the option to go with the Simple seal meant that the original scope works to the building were not disrupted.
Aesthetically, from the underside there is no compromise to the finish lines of the original skylight.
Work below the skylight continued to proceed, which meant the critical path on the program was not
compromised.
No additional structural support needed.Application was made easy by constructing a cantilever scaffold, allowing access but not applying any undue pressure on the skylight
