Get to know the people behind the business with our 5 Questions With series.

Once a month we sit down with a member of the Tremco Construction Products Australia (CPG) team to share some of their wisdom and expertise with us. This month we talked to EHS Manager, Steven Williams.

Steven Williams

1. How long have you been in the industry?

I have been in the chemical industry since 1996 but am newer to the building and construction side, I joined Tremco in 2021.

2. What are some of the most important qualities for an EHS manager to have?

Patience, Persistence and empathy. Everything good takes time and effort, with enough effort we can achieve almost anything.

3. What are some of the most important safety practices you have implemented during your career?

As the EHS manager, you cannot implement changes alone. It requires the collective effort of the entire team, from the staff on the floor to the facility managers.  As a TEAM you review the hazards, and then implement measures to control the risks. Establishing a system for easy reporting, assignment, action, and review of EHS issues is always the top priority. Following that, training and knowledge are essential to understanding potential problems and how to prevent them.

4. In your experience, how can you motivate other team members to prioritise safety in the workplace?

Safety is an integral part of a business's culture and is reflected in the daily decisions we make. It is driven by every level in the business top to bottom. Having knowledge of what we are asking someone to do, and Hazards involved are an important part of providing a safe environment for everyone. Ultimately, the strongest motivation for health and safety comes from our desire to protect ourselves and those around us. No one wants to suffer an injury or illness. Work is just a small part of our lives.

5. Are there any new or emerging trends within EHS that particularly interest you?

In the Environmental side of things there has been a significant shift towards minimising our environmental impact and using sustainable products and packaging. This has lead to an exponential increase in the options available to us for supply and also for what we can recover, recycle and reuse. We have over the last few years had a strong focus on our packaging and am proud to say we have a majority of our products in Green or recyclable materials. We also have systems in place at each facility to be able to recycle cardboard and plastics etc. However, these systems are only effective if we properly sort our waste. Each of us has the opportunity and responsibility to protect our environment, and every effort makes a difference.  Every bit counts.
